Meet The Team

Drew Graham – Team Captain

Drew was a top athlete and completed an athletics scholarship at Adams State University in the USA. In September 2014 Drew broke his neck in Denver Colorado, in a shallow diving accident. Drew suffered a C4/C5 spinal cord injury and was sent to Craig Hospital rehabilitation centre.

After a year of rehabilitation in America Drew returned to England in December 2015. Drew was keen to continue rehabilitation and just generally exercise to stay fit, but found that there was nothing available in the UK similar to what he had experienced in the US. This caused him to suffer from depression as well as a noticeable decrease in his physical health, such as increased muscle spasticity and nerve pain.

After several months of this Drew decided that he had to do something about the lack of accessible gym facilities in the North, because, if he was suffering like this, others probably were too.

Drew set up Gym Possible in Newcastle, and now with support from the Matt Hampson Foundation has a second hub in Gateshead.

Gym Possible is the North East’s first gym specifically designed for wheelchair users, and all funds raised from the World Record attempt go towards helping Gym Possible grow.

Favourite Event: 1500m

Fun Fact: In his late teens and early 20s Drew was in a punk rock band called The Botem Feeders. Despite their very limited talent, they once got paid £300 to play a gig in Scotland. The highlight of their career was a review in a magazine which referred to them as “very, very average”.

Nick Hooker

Nick Hooker Gym Possible

Bio: Nick and Drew met in 2006 when they lived together in Leeds. Nick won the Northern Championships over 1500m as well a several Yorkshire Championships. Nick also anchored Leeds City Harriers to the 12 Stage National Road Relays Championships in 2014, making it onto the front cover of Athletics Weekly.

Favourite Event: 12 Stage Road Relays

Funny Fact: During the 2024 GNR, Nick’s shoe broke apart and the sole fell off at 9 miles! Running with an incomplete shoe, he still finished with the team in 1:26.

Jonathan Graham

Jonathan Graham Gym Possible

Bio: Jonathan, Drew’s brother was a very promising junior athlete winning numerous North East and North of England title, and medalled at the English Schools. After years away from the sport, Jonathan now enjoys fell running and recently completed the Bob Graham 66 miles of peaks challenge in under 24 hours.

Favourite Event: Yorkshire 3 Peaks Race

Funny Fact: Jonathan often gets told he looks like Vincent Van Gogh. It’s happened twice in 2024 alone, most recently by a stranger in a pub.

Ryan McLeod

Ryan McLeod Gym Possible

Bio: Ryan and Drew competed against each other from the age of 12. Ryan was a very successful International athlete winning the British Half Marathon Championships in 2014 and 2015. He represented Great Britain on numerous occasions on Cross-Country, Road & Track. He stopped competitive running in 2016 due to health reasons.

Favourite Event: 6 Stage National Road Relays

Funny Fact: Whilst training in America, Ryan got on the wrong flight to San Francisco. After hearing the announcement of Oakland Airport, he realised his mistake. The cabin crew kindly arranged a taxi for him over to SFO Airport, free of charge… with the pilot!

Matt Bond

Matt Bond Gym Possible

Bio: Bondy and Drew ran together at Adams State University in the USA from 2010 to 2012. Following his successful collegiate track and cross-country career with very fast 5000m, 10,000m and half marathon times, Bondy moved up the marathon and represented Great Britain in the event.

Favourite Event: Good Friday 10k on the Isle of Man

Funny Fact: Whilst competing as an elite athlete in Morocco he had to escape from a snake charmer in Marrakesh!

Matt Nicholson

In his prime Matt was a big name in the North East club athletics events and won numerous medals at North East and Northern level before retiring from the sport. Matt made his long awaited comeback as a member of the Run With Drew team last year.

Favourite Event: Annual Christmas night out runners street race

Funny Fact: Matt tried out for Young Gladiators as a 13 year old. Unfortunately, he didn’t make the cut!

Alex Smith

Bio: Alex and Drew met in Leeds in 2005 and became good friends and training partners. Alex is still a keen distance runner and will be aiming to compete in the European Duathlon Championships in April and the World Duathlon Championships in June 2025.

Favourite Event: Duathlon at Thruxton motor racing circuit in Hampshire or the Wombwell 5 mile.

Funny Fact: A good singer, quite impressive when it comes to cycling general knowledge and as Drew can confirm, a pretty good artist too. Best experience ever was the 2024 GNR pushing Drew.

Sponsors

Puma are kindly sponsoring the whole team with kit and shoes for our record attempt. Start Fitness are one of Puma’s top retailers and are our point of contact for kit and shoes. The team visited their Newcastle running superstore and were fitted out in the correct footwear ready for our big block of training. Later in the year we’ll be trying out some Nitro Elite carbon shoes to help gain those extra seconds on race day.

Lewis Moses, founder of New Levels Coaching has kindly supplied a tailored Half Marathon training plan. Although the pushers are all ex athletes, it’s very easy to get carried away with training. Having a structured consistent plan from NCL not only keeps consistency in training, it also prevents injury and reduces any setbacks.

Science in Sport are kindly supporting the team as nutrition partners. They are going to help fuel our training over the next few months with electrolyte and recovery products. They’ll also help keep us fuelled and hydrated on race day.

Regain are a charity who help sports tetraplegics lead independent and fulfilling lives by fully or part funding equipment and facilities that improve mobility. They kindly financially supported Drew by helping fund a specialist carbon chair so he can take part in events like the Great North Run with ease rather than adapt an NHS day chair.

Run Through are a large sports events company with races in nearly every major city in the UK. Matt and Ben, the founders are kindly offering Drew and the team entries into any of their events so we can practice and train in the build up to the Great North Run in September.
